An Introduction to Black Hole Evaporation

چکیده
Classical black holes are defined by the property that things can go in, but don’t come out. However, Stephen Hawking calculated that black holes actually radiate quantum mechanical particles. The two important ingredients that result in back hole evaporation are (1) the spacetime geometry, in particular the black hole horizon, and (2) the fact that the notion of a “particle” is not an invariant concept in quantum field theory. These notes contain a step-by-step presentation of Hawking’s calculation. We review portions of quantum field theory in curved spacetime and basic results about static black hole geometries, so that the discussion is self-contained. Calculations are presented for quantum particle production for an accelerated observer in flat spacetime, a black hole which forms from gravitational collapse, an eternal Schwarzschild black hole, and charged black holes in asymptotically deSitter spacetimes. The presentation highlights the similarities in all these calculations. Hawking radiation from black holes also points to a profound connection between black hole dynamics and classical thermodynamics. A theory of quantum gravity must predicting and explain black hole thermodynamics. We briefly discuss these issues and point out a connection between black hole evaportaion and the positive mass theorems in general relativity. Table of

We consider a black hole in a heat bath, and the whole system which consists of the black hole and the heat bath is isolated from outside environments. When the black hole evaporates, the Hawking radiation causes an energy flow from the black hole to the heat bath. Therefore, since no energy flow arises in an equilibrium state, thermodynamic state of the whole system is not in an equilibrium. T...

When a black hole evaporates, there arises a net energy flow from the black hole into its outside environment due to the Hawking radiation and the energy accretion onto black hole. Exactly speaking, any thermal equilibrium state has no energy flow, and therefore the black hole evaporation is a nonequilibrium process. To study details of evaporation process, nonequilibrium effects of the net ene...
متن کاملBlack Hole Evaporation and Higher-Derivative Gravity I
We examine the role which higher-derivative gravity interactions may play in black hole evaporation. The thermodynamic properties of black holes in Lovelock gravity are described. In certain cases, the specific heat of a black hole becomes positive at a small mass. This results in an infinite lifetime for the black hole (and also allows it to achieve stable equilibrium with a thermal environmen...
متن کاملUnitarity of black hole evaporation in final-state projection models
Almheiri et al. have emphasized that otherwise reasonable beliefs about black hole evaporation are incompatible with the monogamy of quantum entanglement, a general property of quantum mechanics. We investigate the final-state projection model of black hole evaporation proposed by Horowitz and Maldacena, pointing out that this model admits cloning of quantum states and polygamous entanglement, ...
متن کاملCoordinates with Non-Singular Curvature for a Time Dependent Black Hole Horizon
A naive introduction of a dependency of the mass of a black hole on the Schwarzschild time coordinate results in singular behavior of curvature invariants at the horizon, violating expectations from complementarity. If instead a temporal dependence is introduced in terms of a coordinate akin to the river time representation, the Ricci scalar is nowhere singular away from the origin. It is found...
